1993
Data - March 15 through April 30,1993
Total animals killed involving 25 schools throughout New England.
-

-
Week #2 - 279
-
Week #3 - 504
-
Week #4 - 336
-
Week #5 - 449

Total
of 1923 animals killed for the period.
The roadkill data for 1993 reported 82% mammals, 15% birds,
and 3% reptiles and amphibians.
Merritt Clifton, Editor Animal People Newspaper, used the 1993
roadkill statistics and estimated that the following animals
are being killed by motor vehicles:
-
41 million squirrels
-
26 million cats
-
22 million rats
-
19 million opossums
-
15 million raccoons
-
6 million dogs
-
350,000 deer
He also believes that the moon phases have an effect on the
amount of roadkills. Further study is needed to support this
theory.

Note: The decrease in many animals may be attributed
to the rabies outbreak throughout the New England area. Many
of the animals such as raccoons, skunks, and opossums decreased
in roadkill reports by as much as 50%!

New England may account for the low numbers of animals killed
by motor vehicles.
